Birdcage extends the physical representation of color in a sculpture made from vinyl wall/ flooring base-transition. Each vinyl is custom-spray-painted and together form an organic flowery object. These colors are the same ones found in my two channel video, Colorbound. At the core lies an aluminum cast of Mao Zedong’s book of writings, also known in the West as the Little Red Book. Placed in the center of the sculpture, the aluminum object is removed of its original meaning while surrounded by a multitude of color strips. Much like feminist philosopher Marilyn Frye’s description of metal wires in relation to the whole of a birdcage, the individual colors act as a “network of systematically related barriers, no one of which would be the least hindrance... but which, by their relations to each other, are as confining as the solid walls of a dungeon.”
